Duties, Responsibilities & Other

Under general direction, provides technical expertise in highway design with SCDOT focus. May function as lead designer or technical consultant. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.

·         Defines scope of project, with full responsibility for interpreting, organizing and executing project assignments.

·         Selects problems for investigation, developing novel approaches and solutions to technical problems.

·         Conducts quality control checks, reviewing calculations, designs, evaluations and specifications developed by design staff for accuracy and completeness, performing on-site inspections and reviews, and conducting or overseeing remedial design work.

·         Keeps abreast of state-of-the-art methods and developments in area of specialization.

·         Recommends changes or improvements to plans and programs.

·         May function as the project manager for routine to semi-complex projects. Responsibilities may include marketing, negotiating contracts, budgeting, financial management, schedule coordination and resources allocation.

·         Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

·         Supervises and/or coordinates with other senior professionals and support staff.

·         Interfaces with senior technical professionals, technical managers and administrative staff and managers as necessary.

·         Represents the organization in conferences with clients, prospective clients and regulatory agencies.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering is required.
  • PE required or ability to obtain within year
  • Strong preference given to candidate with demonstrated design experience with microstation and geopak 


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. Appropriate graduate level work. Master's degree preferred.  
  • 6 - 10 years of professional experience.  PE Required.
  • The target candidate will have experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring projects involving both overhead and underground engineering systems.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.

Performance Expectations

  • Submit for approval and deliver timely annual Employee Performance Appraisals for assigned staff
  • Train adequate backup personnel to support your role in your absence
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures
  • Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements
  • Manage work routine of all assigned staff and assign job activities as required
  • Complete other duties as required/assigned
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization target(75%-80% typical)
  • Attend bi-weekly(or more frequently as necessary) meetings with project team on all projects/tasks
  • Chart and provide task performance results
  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope
  • Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required
  • Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
  • Prepare interpractice agreements and/or outside requests as required
  • Provide technical project and staff oversight
  • Serve as task manager on select projects
  • Compare field data to base plan
  • Conduct site visits and gather data, including measurements, sketches, notes and photographs as needed
  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for review and approval
  • Prepare preliminary concept designs and submit for approval
  • Read and interpret technical documents needed for performance of job
  • Review and approve shop drawings
  • Complete Annual Individual Training Program
