Duties, Responsibilities & Other

This position is for a Senior Structural Engineer in KCI's Transportation Structures Practice. In addition to the minimum years of experience listed in the "Qualifications" section, the preferred candidate will have an additional 0 to 5 years years of experience (10 to 15 years total) in structural engineering, preferably related to bridge design, bridge analysis, and/or bridge condition inspection. 

Preferred experience includes design and condition inspection of bridges, retaining walls, and culverts for PennDOT and/or the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission projects. Knowledge of PennDOT's computer programs for structure design (PSLRFD, STLRFD, SPLRFD, BPLRFD, ABLRFD, etc.) is also required. 

The candidate will be required to perform design calculations using spreadsheets and through the use of computer programs, and occasionally by hand; develop plan details for contract drawings; calculate quantities for construction; and perform QA/QC checks of both design calculations and contract drawings. Occasional bridge condition inspection and reporting is required. Supervision and training of junior staff may also be required.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. Appropriate graduate level work. Master's degree preferred.  
  • 6 - 10 years of professional experience.  PE Required.
  • The target candidate will have experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring projects involving both overhead and underground engineering systems.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.

Performance Expectations

  • Submit for approval and deliver timely annual Employee Performance Appraisals for assigned staff
  • Train adequate backup personnel to support your role in your absence
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures
  • Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements
  • Manage work routine of all assigned staff and assign job activities as required
  • Complete other duties as required/assigned
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization target(75%-80% typical)
  • Attend bi-weekly(or more frequently as necessary) meetings with project team on all projects/tasks
  • Chart and provide task performance results
  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope
  • Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required
  • Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
  • Prepare interpractice agreements and/or outside requests as required
  • Provide technical project and staff oversight
  • Serve as task manager on select projects
  • Compare field data to base plan
  • Conduct site visits and gather data, including measurements, sketches, notes and photographs as needed
  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for review and approval
  • Prepare preliminary concept designs and submit for approval
  • Read and interpret technical documents needed for performance of job
  • Review and approve shop drawings
  • Complete Annual Individual Training Program
