Duties, Responsibilities & Other

 

The Senior Transmission Engineer will be responsible for activities directly related to the design of transmission lines for investor-owned utilities (IOUs), electric cooperatives, and municipal power companies. 

 

This person will be responsible for the design and engineering of transmission lines which will include developing scope, developing cost estimates, producing construction packages, analyzing line clearances, incorporation of as-built documentation, attending onsite project meetings, and providing construction support through to project completion.

 

This position will provide the opportunity to collaborate with multiple clients and their internal departments such as, but not limited to, Substation, Distribution, Telecommunications, Relay and Protection, Transmission Planning, Project Management, Right-of-Way Acquisition, Asset Management, and Environmental.

 

The qualified candidate will have experience in transmission line routing, permitting, structural analysis and optimization, structure spotting, conductor selection, incorporating joint use and distribution attachments, utilization of LiDAR in designs, as well as foundation analysis and design. They will have the following preferred qualifications: 

  • 8 years experience with direct involvement in designing transmission lines preferred
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of transmission engineering, including routing, conductor selection, structure selection, plan and profile development, producing detailed and accurate material lists, permitting, etc.
  • High level of proficiency in the PLS-CADD software suite, MFAD, and other commonly used software applications
  • Experience in the utilization of LiDAR in PLS-CADD design
  • Extensive knowledge of transmission design documents and drawings required for the construction and permitting of transmission lines
  • Knowledge and understanding of substation structures, foundations, and associated site development challenges
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering standards including NESC, IEEE, ASCE, ACI and ANSI that apply to transmission line design
  • Ability to produce load sheets and drawings for the fabrication of custom steel poles
  • Demonstrated experience performing EMF studies and calculations
  • Experience leading pre-construction and periodic site meetings, as required
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects and collaborating directly with the client and all other stakeholders throughout the life cycle of the project
    • The stakeholders include, but are not limited to, Project Management, Right of Way Acquisition consultants, Environmental consultants, Transmission line siting consultants, Substation Engineers, Telecom Designers, Distribution Designers, and construction personnel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. Appropriate graduate level work. Master's degree preferred.  
  • 6 - 10 years of professional experience.  PE Required.
  • The target candidate will have experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring projects involving both overhead and underground engineering systems.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.

Performance Expectations

  • Submit for approval and deliver timely annual Employee Performance Appraisals for assigned staff
  • Train adequate backup personnel to support your role in your absence
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures
  • Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements
  • Manage work routine of all assigned staff and assign job activities as required
  • Complete other duties as required/assigned
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization target(75%-80% typical)
  • Attend bi-weekly(or more frequently as necessary) meetings with project team on all projects/tasks
  • Chart and provide task performance results
  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope
  • Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required
  • Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
  • Prepare interpractice agreements and/or outside requests as required
  • Provide technical project and staff oversight
  • Serve as task manager on select projects
  • Compare field data to base plan
  • Conduct site visits and gather data, including measurements, sketches, notes and photographs as needed
  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for review and approval
  • Prepare preliminary concept designs and submit for approval
  • Read and interpret technical documents needed for performance of job
  • Review and approve shop drawings
  • Complete Annual Individual Training Program
