Duties, Responsibilities & Other

KCI’s Natural Resource Practice is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to support our Ecological Restoration group located in our headquarters in Sparks, MD or in our Fulton, MD. Our Natural Resources team of engineers, planners, and scientists works in a variety of environmental, natural resource, and water resources subject areas for private clients and state and local governments in the mid-Atlantic region.

 

  • In a supervisory capacity plans, develops, coordinates, and directs several large and important projects or a project of major scope and importance.  
  • Potential to manage 1 to 3 direct reports.
  • As a staff specialist, serves as specialist for the organization in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned area of responsibility. Keeps abreast of new scientific methods and developments affecting KCI for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of program or new programs warranted by such developments. 
  • Assists in proposals, negotiations, and presentations.
  • Work with all departments within the company to develop client relationships that lead to sustainable profitable revenue.
  • Lead geomorphological assessments including non-datum survey; photo documentation; and sediment sampling.
  • Develop conceptual designs and reports articulating alternatives and reflecting them via ArcGIS or MicroStation.
  • Estimate credits based on the Bay Protocols for Urban Stream Restoration.
  • Estimate functional feet and buffer credits using the Maryland Stream Mitigation Framework.
  • Build 3D surfaces in MicroStation or AutoCAD Civil3D to accurately represent existing and proposed surfaces.
  • Develop hydrology for a site including field verifying drainage areas; subdrainage area delineations; TR-55 and TR-20 models; regional regressions; and calibration to field survey to determine design discharges.
  • Hydraulic Modeling including 1D HEC RAS model for existing and proposed and 2D modeling.
  • Develop detailed engineering stream restoration designs including plans, reports, specifications, engineer’s estimate.
  • Oversee construction and post construction performance monitoring with associated asbuilt and monitoring report development.
  • Use analytical skills necessary to solve complex problems both in a team setting and individually.
  • Functioning efficiently with minimal guidance will be expected. Independent work, organizational ability, regular communication, and time management skills are required for this position.

 

Additional Qualification Details

  • Minimum of 6 years professional experience related to ecological restoration and stream assessment for natural and urbanized channels required
  • A demonstrated understanding of fluvial geomorphology principles and processes and restoration methodologies for freshwater and tidal ecosystems required
  • Experience performing geomorphic assessments and restoration design in the Mid-Atlantic required
  • Ability to organize and write technical assessment and design reports documenting approach, findings, and recommendations required
  • Ability to perform and document computations to inform and validate designs is required
  • Proficiency in MicroStation or AutoCAD including ability to build 3D surfaces of existing and proposed conditions required
  • Ability to prepare engineers cost estimates and specifications required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word required
  • Ability to work in a team environment, with individuals in other geographies is a prerequisite of this opportunity.
  • Ability to travel to job sites and perform field work in various weather conditions is required.
  • Ability to perform Hydrology & Hydraulics (H&H) analysis using TR-55 and TR-20; and HEC-RAS or other programs accepted by regulatory agencies preferred
  • Ability to perform and document Protocol computations for Sediment and Nutrient load reductions and equivalent impervious acre credits preferred
  • Experience in State, Federal, and Local permitting preferred

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. Appropriate graduate level work. Master's degree preferred.  
  • 6 - 10 years of professional experience.  PE Required.
  • The target candidate will have experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring projects involving both overhead and underground engineering systems.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.
