Duties, Responsibilities & Other

The Electrical Estimator is responsible for analyzing project plans, specifications, and requirements to prepare accurate cost estimates for electrical work on construction, industrial, or commercial projects. This role plays a critical part in securing new business and ensuring project profitability.

 

Estimating & Bidding

  • Review architectural and electrical drawings, blueprints, and specifications
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for materials (wire, conduit, panels, fixtures, etc.)
  • Calculate labor hours and costs based on scope of work
  • Prepare and submit competitive bid proposals
  • Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers and subcontractors

Project Analysis

  • Identify project risks, exclusions, and clarifications
  • Analyze RFIs (Requests for Information) and addenda
  • Review contract specifications.
  • Conduct site visits to assess conditions affecting cost

 

Coordination & Communication

  • Collaborate with construction and project managers, engineers, and field superintendents
  • Present estimates to clients and internal leadership
  • Maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors
  • Participate in pre-bid and pre-construction meetings

 

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain organized estimate files and bid logs
  • Track historical cost data to improve future estimates
  • Assist with change order proposals during construction

Additional Responsibilities – during downtime

  • Assist with Construction management as needed
  • Assist with Permitting, Submittals, RFI’s and As-Built Construction drawings and all close out documents
  • Meet inspectors as needed to complete required inspections

 

Specialized Experience 

  • Extensive electrical construction or estimating experience
  • Familiarity with NEC (National Electrical Code) and local codes

Technical Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and specifications
  • Knowledge of electrical systems: power distribution, lighting, low-voltage, fire alarm

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and mathematical ability
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Time management — ability to handle multiple bids simultaneously
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

Qualifications

Education and/or Skills Required:

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience within the electrical construction or estimating industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree Civil Engineering, Construction Management or related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of common industry quantity takeoff software (Bluebeam Revu or similar).
  • Working knowledge of cost estimating software such as Accubid, ConEst, FastDUCT, Bluebeam, or similar
  • Excellent public speaking, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Good communication and technical writing skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think critically.

Education and/or Work Experience Preferred:

  • AutoCAD or MicroStation experience
